Travel Guide: Food hotspots on Texel

Last Updated on by Charlotte van de Sande

Travelling to distant, foreign places is great, but we sometimes forget our home country, The Netherlands. This summer we decided to enjoy our own sweet little country. Because when the sun shines, The Netherlands is actually also very nice. This time a blog with the best restaurants on Texel, a small island in the Wadden Sea in the north of The Netherlands.

The best restaurants of Texel: Tips from the locals

At the end of May, for the first time in my life, I visited a Wadden island: Texel. I completely fell in love with this place: I want to go here every weekend! The island vibe, the sweet villages, the beautiful nature, and of course the beach! I am fond of the beach and in Texel, there is almost 30 kilometre of beautiful golden sand and blue waves. Fortunately, our friends Jorinde and Tim (who we met in The Philippines) live on Texel and we now, in August we are again on the ferry towards Texel.

With friends who live on this island, we are quite spoiled; a lot of fun with all the locals, a wonderful place to sleep, and the most beautiful beaches. Jorinde and Tim take us to all kinds of restaurants and cosy beach bars, places that are really nice, not the standard tourist attractions. Here is a selection of my favourite restaurants on Texel.

Nederland Texel

1. Lokaal 16 (breakfast & lunch)

Gravenstraat 16, 1791 CK Den Burg

You can have breakfast and lunch at Lokaal 16. In this characteristic building in Den Burg, all the food is organic and with a great taste. You can enjoy the sun, sitting on a bench in front of the restaurant, sit inside or in the cosy garden. We ate lunch here and had grilled cheese sandwiches, zucchini soup, avocado toast and carrot cake. Also, the coffee is very good, with a high variety of different flavours and they even have soy milk (I do not like regular milk). When I saw the breakfast menu, I knew: we have to come back here for breakfast!

Westerslag 4, 1791 PP Den Burg

Are you on the beach and do you fancy something special, not a standard beach snack? Then visit Gastropaviljoen XV, where they serve delicious and beautiful dishes! On the menu are special dishes such as cod carpaccio with shrimp foam, shallots Tarte Tartin with fermented beetroot and soft-shell crab with wakame. Delightful food with a relaxed beach atmosphere. We sat on the terrace, but also inside it looked very cosy with a huge open heater for on cold days. From the same owner is also Strandpaviljoen Vijftien, which is directly opposite on the beach of Gastropaviljoen XV.

3. De Compagnie (lunch, drinks and dinner)

Haven 20, 1792 AE Oudeschild

The Company is located in the harbour of Oudeschild, a small sweet village. Sitting here, you will feel a cool breeze while you look out over the Wadden Sea. There is a casual atmosphere, with not too much fuss. Great to have a cosy dinner or just some drinks and finger food after you have been relaxing the whole afternoon on the nearby beach. We ordered a big tapas plate and drank a bottle of good light rose. For dinner, I ordered the seafood salad, recommend by Jorinde, and it was very tasty!

4. Strand paviljoen 12 (beach)

Jan Ayeslag 2, 1797 RM Den Hoorn

On the beach of Paal 12, where almost only locals come, you will find Strandpaviljoen Twaalf. It has a real surfers vibe, with great music, big banks and relaxed staff. There are given yoga classes and massages every Friday and the staff participates in various food festivals under the name Donkey Business.

We had to wait a bit for our food, but it was really delicious. I ate a large bowl of coconut yoghurt with lots of fruit, and Ries a veggie burger with crispy golden fries. Which we really like from the owner Steven was that when we came back to the beach the next day, and we wanted to celebrate something with a bottle of champagne that we had brought from the Champagne region, he let us borrow his champagne glasses!

5. ‘t Pakhuus (lunch & dinner)

Haven 8, 1792 AE Oudeschild

This fish restaurant is located in the harbour of Oudeschild. At ‘t Pakhuus you enjoy all the regional seafood in a luxurious setting. We didn’t eat here but have heard many good stories about this place. Therefore I would go here someday, and then I will definitely go for the Texel menu. All dishes on this menu are prepared with ingredients from the island itself.

Above ‘t Pakuus the hotel Texel Suites is seated. This luxury design hotel has spacious suites including a fireplace and a view of the harbour. The suites are not cheap at all, but so beautiful to sleep in! Combine a dinner at ‘t Pakhuus with an overnight stay and you have the perfect romantic weekend away!Nederland - Texel

Other cool restaurants on Texel

When you go to Texel with kids, pay a visit to the restaurant Quinty’s or Oranjerie t Vogelhuis. Totally kids-proof including children’s menus and play corners. Perhaps even more fun for (and with) kids is Catharinahoeve, a pancake restaurant in the middle of the forest.

For gelato, visit ice cream farm Labora, where the ice cream is made fresh. You can even visit the cows that deliver the milk for the ice cream and see them being milked.

Do you prefer very fancy food? On Texel, there is a Michelin-starred restaurant, where you can also spend the night and have a seven-course breakfast: Bij Jef
