Brunch: my favourite meal out there! From an extensive brunch with mimosas to a healthy brunch or an Australian brunch (read greasy and savoury things). For me having brunch is the ultimate weekend feeling! And did you know that you can have brunch very well in Amsterdam? Well, I didn’t know until I started looking for nice brunch restaurants in my own neighbourhood (the border from Amsterdam Oud Zuid to Amsterdam Oud-West).
And it turns out: there are a lot of restaurants where you can have perfect brunch in Amsterdam South and Amsterdam West. So here are the best brunch restaurants, places where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and brunch and hip brunch hotspots in Amsterdam West and Amsterdam South.
Brunch in Amsterdam South (Zuid) or West (West)!
The best moment of the week: it’s Saturday morning, Ries and I just finished a sweaty kickboxing class. Now it’s time for brunch: my favourite meal! Since we are very hungry, we stay in our own neighbourhood: just on the border from Oud-West to Oud Zuid (two areas in Amsterdam which are in the south and west of the city). A nice place to live with lots of nice restaurants.
Brunch in Amsterdam West: Staring at Jacob
Jacob van Lennepkade 215, 1053 NK Amsterdam
Website
New York Brunch & Bar, that’s how Staring at Jacobs names itself. The menu definitely matches this; the best brunch dishes with bacon, maple syrup and eggs. We will go here if we are really hungry! Inside it’s always full, so make a reservation in advance. Staring at Jacobs has changed ownership recently. The restaurant is now Staring at Jacob during the day and evolves into the Japanese restaurant Ku Kitchen West in the evening. A weird combination but apparently this works.
My favourite dish here is the Monkey Business (French toast, mascarpone and red fruit), but Ries often goes for the All Round: a bit of everything, eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausages, potatoes and of course Maple Syrup.
Brunch in Amsterdam West: Coffee & Juices
No nonsense, just tasty sandwiches, good coffee and nice juices. Sometimes I love to spend a few hours at Coffee & Juices. Inside there are chesterfield benches and there is this typical large wooden reading table where everyone is reading the newspaper. Just before we went on our world trip, we sat every Saturday at this table with travel guides, excel sheets and maps, to lay out our routes. In the summer you can sit outside in the windowsills.
My favourite dish here: a bowl of yoghurt with fruit and the tastiest homemade cruesli ever!

Brunch in Amsterdam South: Drovers Dog
Heemstedestraat 25, 1059 CX Amsterdam
Website
“G’day Mate, How are you going?” At Drovers Dog you imagine yourself in Australia! This super relaxed restaurant is close to Hoofddorpplein and has plenty of space both inside and outside. Here you can enjoy a really good Australian brunch: greasy, huge plates and soooo delicious! But there are also enough healthy things to order such as the salad with goat cheese and roasted pumpkin. I like to eat here when I have a small hangover and want to wake up quietly. Some magazines and lots of good food! Drovers Dog is also on the Wibautstraat and in the Indische area.
I love the ricotta pancakes with fresh fruit and maple syrup.
Brunch in Amsterdam West: Coffee Room
Kinkerstraat 110, 1053 EC Amsterdam
Website
Yellow canopies, cosy chairs and nothing hipster-like. The Coffee Room looks from the outside like this typical neighbourhood restaurant where everyone knows each other. A bit like the vibe of Central Perk from Friends. I love to sit in my sportswear on the terrace to watch people passing by. Inside are two floors, on the top, there is a sort of co-working space, below it is a bit cosier.
Despite the fact that the coffee room is not hipster at all, you can get thé hipster dish right here: the Acaï bowl. And that’s what I like to eat here!

Brunch in Amsterdam South: Dignita
Koninginnenweg 218, 1075 EL Amsterdam
Website
Strawberries & cream pancakes, Macrobiotic summer salad and a Roll of Creamy Mushrooms; this is a small selection of the delicious dishes on the menu at Dignita. Each and every one of them is super colourful and has a great taste! Also nice, the menu includes an extensive range of side dishes that are not expensive at all. There are a few tables outside, and furthermore, you can sit inside on one of the three floors. It is light and spacious. Dignita is a stone throw away from the Vondelpark. There is also a Dignita in Amsterdam East: in the “hoftuin” behind the museum the Hermitage.
My favourite dish here is “Eggs your way” with the side dish “Truffle Mushrooms”.

Brunch in Amsterdam West: Sticky Fingers (coffee bar)
Then a final shout out to a coffee bar where we have never ordered anything, but what looks so cool when we cycle past it: Sticky Fingers. Here you don’t go for brunch, but you will find all kind of pastries and coffee. Sticky Fingers sits next to the hotel lobby of The Tire station, which, as the name suggests, is located in an old tire factory. Location: Amstelveenseweg 3, 1054 MB Amsterdam.
